How one DUI can change the future

On Behalf of | Sep 8, 2022 | DUI

Getting a DUI conviction could have many long-lasting and unforeseen repercussions on a person’s life. While someone may initially feel tempted to treat a charge like no big deal – especially if it is a first-time offense – this is the wrong way to go about it.

To that end, it is important to understand how one DUI could potentially change the future.

Impact to college paths

Forbes looks into what happens after a person ends up with a DUI. First, if a person is attending college or has plans to do so, a DUI could seriously interfere with this. Some colleges may pass up a person with a DUI on record, especially if the admission rate is very low.

While it is unusual for colleges to expel students for a DUI conviction, it still happens. What is more likely, however, is the retraction of any and all financial support. They may revoke gifts or prizes and could even bar the student from using on-campus housing. This could make it impossible for them to afford attendance.

Impact regarding careers

A DUI can also impact career trajectories. Many industries do not hire people with a DUI on record. This includes anything that requires the transportation of goods or people, as well as all jobs that involve children such as teaching or daycare. Most government positions will not hire someone with a DUI, either.

Finally, it can control where a person lives. Many landlords may pass over an applicant for a criminal record in order to accept someone with a clean record instead. It even limits the places a person can go. For example, Canada does not allow anyone with a DUI into the country for 10 years.

These are important factors to take into consideration when facing a DUI charge.
